Australia'sWorking Holiday visa program (subclass 417)

Introduction

A Working Holiday provides an opportunity to have an extended holiday in Australia for up to 12 months and seek casual work to help fund your trip. You can do any kind of work but if the main purpose of your visit is to work you should consider exploring other visa options such as General Skilled Migration (subclasses 189, 190 or 491) or the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482).

Australia commenced the Working Holiday program in 1975. There has been a significant increase in applications and in the 2024/2025 financial year, Australia issued almost 200,000 Working Holiday visas (subclasses 417 and 462). A record 79,000 visas were granted to UK backpackers up from 47,000 in 2023/2024. Growing interest in the program is attributed to the removal of specified work requirements for British citizens, an increase in the maximum age to 35 for some countries, a strong local job market and the removal of the need to do farm work to obtain a 2nd or 3rd working holiday for British passport holders.

FAQ's

Why use an agent registered with the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA)?

The decision to engage a MARA registered migration agent is a personal choice. If you do require assistance with the visa process, the Department of Home Affairs strongly recommend that you appoint an agent who is registered with MARA who must satisfy a strict code of conduct and:

  • maintain current knowledge of migration law and procedure
  • keep a professional library with direct access to migration regulations via Legend
  • undertake continuous professional development in order to maintain knowledge of migration regulations and policy

An agent who is not registered with MARA cannot offer you any legal protection and is not accountable for his/her actions and therefore might:

  • make false claims about your chances of success
  • give you incorrect advice
  • have limited knowledge about current Australian visa legislation and procedures
  • increase your risk of being exposed to migration fraud
  • charge fees which are unreasonable and excessive.
Will I be granted a Working Holiday visa for Australia if I have a criminal conviction?

To be granted a visa for Australia you must not have a conviction that resulted in a prison sentence or suspended sentence of 12 or more months or been convicted for 2 or more offences where the combined length of the sentences amounts to 12 or more months. Passengers arriving in Australia are required to complete an Incoming Passenger Card. This is a legal document and you must disclose any current or previous convictions which may result in you being interviewed at immigration clearance.
