General Criteria - Contributory Parents
During the 2013/2014 program year the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has allocated 6,675 places for Contributory Parents. The average processing timetable is 18 months.
Contributory Parents have the choice to apply for a permanent or temporary visa and if the primary applicant is old enough to be granted an Australian aged pension there is also the option to be in Australia at the time of lodgement and for the grant of the visa.
To be eligible you must have at least half of your children living in Australia permanently or more children living in Australia permanently than any other single country.
Parents can be sponsored by a natural child, step-child or adopted child who must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen and settled in Australia for a period of at least 2 years.
The following children of both parents are counted in the balance of family test:
children from previous marriages or de facto relationships
adopted and stepchildren
children residing in institutions
children who are dependent or self-supporting, single, married or divorced
Contributory Parents - subclasses 143 and 173
The average processing timetable for applications lodged outside Australia is 18 - 21 months.
Aged Contributory Parents - subclasses 864 and 884
Parents who qualify for the above visas and apply in Australia can expect to be granted a visa within 6 months.
