Remaining Relative Visas

This visa class is for applicants and if applicable their spouse whose immediate family reside permanently in Australia. There is no age limit and your employment and English language skills are not assessed.

Processing priorities

Under Australia's family reunion migration program, a high priority is given to child and partner applications. Other family applications have a lower processing priority, and you should expect a substantial wait before your application is finalised.

Basic criteria

This visa class allows Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens to sponsor a brother, sister, child (or step-equivalent) to migrate to Australia.

You can also be sponsored as a remaining near relative if you are a child under 18, who was adopted overseas and your adoptive parent has spent a minimum of 12 months living overseas prior to the lodgement of your application.

Your sponsor must be settled for a period of at least 2 years and undertake to provide adequate accommodation and financial assistance (if required) to meet reasonable living needs after you arrive in Australia.

You cannot be sponsored as a remaining relative if:

Your sponsor has previously sponsored or nominated a relative described above who has subsequently been granted a visa on the basis of being a remaining relative or was granted a visa themselves on the basis of being a remaining relative.

You have any near relative (other than those who are usually resident in Australia and are an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or an eligible ew Zealand citizen).

You have any near relatives who hold temporary entry visas for Australia or whose whereabouts are unknown.

Assurnace of Support

You will need to arrange an Assurance of Support (AoS) before your visa is granted. An AoS is a commitment to provide financial support to a Remaining Relative so that he/she does not have to rely on any government forms of support.
