If the travel validity period of your permanent visa has expired or is about to expire a RRV will allow you to maintain your status as an Australian permanent resident on your return to Australia.
To be eligible for a RRV you must be an Australian permanent resident or a former Australian permanent resident whose last permanent visa was not cancelled or a former Australian citizen who lost or renounced their citizenship
5 year RRV
A RRV valid for a further 5 years is granted to applicants who can evidence that they have spent a minimum of 2 years in Australia in the last 5 years.
1 year RRV (for applicants outside Australia)
If your last departure from australia was as a permanent resident or Australian citizen:
You must provide evidence of substantial business, cultural, employment or personal ties of benefit to Australia. If you have been absent for more than 5 continuous years since your last departure from australia as an Australian permanent resident or Australian citizen, you must also provide evidence of compelling reasons for your absence over 5 years.
If your last departure from Australia was NOT as an Australian permanent resident or Australian citizen:
You must provide evidence of substantial business, cultural, employment or personal ties of benefit to Australia and you must have been an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident less than 10 years before your application. If you have been absent from Australia for a total period of more than 5 years since last departing Australia as an Australian citizen or permanent resident you must also provide evidence of compelling reasons for your absence.
