A 51 year old man has been sentenced to a total of 7 years gaol after being convicted over a string of criminal and migration fraud offences which has cost his victims over A$730,000. The charges arose following a joint investigation between the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) and the WA police major fraud squad.
The offence included 19 charges under the Migration Act which related to unregistered migration advice, providing false or forged documents and misleading information to the DIBP. The significant sentence sends a clear warning to people that migration and criminal fraud is a serious offence and in order to avoid being a victim of migration fraud, people seeking migration advice should ensure they only use registered migration agents. The sentencing follows the recent successful prosecution of another Western Australian man who was gaoled for four years for similar offences and ordered to repay costs of A$39,000 to his victims.
